Fire Prevention

One of the most important aspects of the fire service is prevention. With the proper knowledge, most tragedies can be prevented. Because of this Beacon FD is also actively involved in the fire prevention side of the business as well as the suppression side. City firefighters perform fire inspections and have an active fire prevention program for children and adults. Providing fire extinguisher training, help with building evacuation plans and educating the public about carbon monoxide hazards are commonplace. That is why we have added this section to the website, because we are constantly striving to educate the general public with fire prevention and fire safety information.

WHY?

  • Roughly every 3 hours someone dies in a home fire. (NFPA 2002)
  • More than half of all fire deaths occur in the 5% of homes that do not have a smoke detector. (NFPA 2002)
  • Only 25% of homes in the US have practiced a home fire escape plan. (NFPA 2002)
  • Heating equipment is the leading cause of fires in the winter months. (NFPA 2002)
  • Candle fires are increasingly becoming more prevalent, with an estimated 15,000 fires and 100 deaths as a result of a candle. (NFPA 1999)
  • The kitchen is the most common place where a fire starts in the home. (NFPA 2002)
  • Smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in the US, almost 1/4 of all fire deaths. (NFPA 1999)
