COLD SPRING (6 Feb 02) - On Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at about 10 PM, the Cold Spring Fire Department located in Putnam County was dispatched for an odor of smoke in the Grand Union in the Grand Union Plaza. Upon arrival they found heavy smoke in the rear of the store. Due to little water supply in the area, the fire quickly spread throughout the store and 3 other neighboring stores including a Post Office.

It took fire departments from 3 different counties; Putnam, Ducthess, and Orange and about 15 different departments all night to bring the fire under control. Eventually the entire Grand Union store collapsed resulting in no injuries. There were multiple lines and stang guns in operations as well as 2 ladder pipes and a tower ladder. Water was brought in by tankers and was drafted from the Hudson River located about 1 1/2 miles away. The fire is believed to be accidental but is still under investigation.
