BEACON (8 August 2007) - At about 5:30pm a structure fire was transmitted by Dutchess 911 for City of Beacon Engine 33-11, 33-12, and Tower Ladder 33-45 at the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge Maintenance Facility. While enroute, first due Engine 33-12 reported smoke showing and Dutchess 911 updated the alarm stating they were receiving an automatic fire alarm from the facility.
Upon arrival of Car 33-1, Chief Joseph, he reported heavy smoke showing with fire through the roof. Due to the isolated location of the facility on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge facility a tanker task force was special called as a precaution in case a hydrant could not be secured. Glenham Tanker 43-31 was dispatched to the scene and placed in charge of water operations and Hughsonville Tanker 45-31 and Chelsea Tanker 35-35 were both placed on stand-by.
Soon afterwards, a second alarm was transmitted bringing Rescue 33-55 and Village of Fishkill Quint 42-12 as the FAST team to the scene, along with all available off-duty paid firefighters and the Battalion Coordinator, Car 14-17 (Coordinator VanBuren). In addition it placed Glenham Engine 43-11 to City Fire Station 2 and Rombout Tower Ladder 62-45 to City Fire Headquarters to cover the city.
Once companies arrived and assembled they soon found a hydrant on Interstate 84, near the complex. The tanker task force was then kept on stand-by and Engine 33-12 established a connection to the hydrant. Companies then used a 2 1/2" attack line along with two 1 3/4" attack lines to knock down the fire in the 30 x100 1 story steel-construction maintainance garage. Companies also opened up the roof from Tower Ladder 33-45 and opened up the roll-down garage doors with K12 saws.
The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes and was confined to the maintenance building. There were no injuries and the fire has been determined accidental in nature.
