BEACON (12 August 06) - The department's chaplain, Reverand Doctor Owen Mercer, passed away late Saturday after a long battle with cancer. The Reverend, affectingly called "The Rev", served as the department's chaplin since 1999 when he joined the Lewis Tompkins Hose Company.

"The Rev" served as the Tompkins Hose Vice President during 2005 and in 2006, until he passed away. He also served as the company and department chaplain from his joining of the department until his passing.

The chaplin's wake will be held at the First Reformed Church on Route 9D, just south of fire station 2. The first calling will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 from 2p-4p and the second calling will be from 7p-9p. The full fire department funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 6:30p at the same location.
