BEACON (5 September 2008) - Friday, September 5, 2008, turned out a busy day with a tractor trailer fire and large oil spill. At around 4:15am, Engine 33-12 was dispatched for a reported tractor trailer fire on Interstate 84 at the Toll-Plaza for the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
Upon arrival of Engine 33-12, he reported a heavily involved trailer and a full first alarm assignment was assigned. Upon arrival of Engine 33-11 and Tower Ladder 33-45, companies knocked down the main body of fire with both engines stang guns.
Glenham Tanker 43-31 was special called on-top of the 1st alarm assignment for additional water due to no near-by operational hydrants. It took companies about 2 hours to fully extinguish the blaze. The trailer was carrying laundry detergent and no one was injured in the incident.
Later in the day, around 12:30pm, another first alarm was transmitted for a report of 100 gallons of oil in a basement at 67 Spring St. Upon arrival of companies, Car 33-1 (Chief Joseph), reported an undetermined amount of fuel oil in the basement which had a dirt floor. At this time he requested County Haz-Mat and State DEC to the scene.
The incident was apparently caused by persons breaking into the vacant apartment house and stealing the cooper piping from the home heating system. This caused the oil tank to leak its contents onto the floor of the building. The incident was turned over to County Haz-Mat and DEC.
