BEACON (28 August 06) - With terrorism being the number one topic in the fire service, many fire departments are scrambling to make themselves capable of handling these emergencies. That coupled with the huge increase of rescue emergencies and decrease in actual fires, has lead many departments to purchasing and training in rescue. Beacon is no exception with numerous rescue hazards that include an interstate highway and bridge that carries that highway over a major river, numerous industrial facilities, recreation facilities, and much more.
All of these potential hazards have made it necessary for the city to replace it's much outdated original rescue. The 19 year old rig will be replaced with a much larger and state-of-the-art rescue rig. Costing around $500,000; the new rig will be able to handle and equip firefighters to handle auto accidents, specialized rescue situations, and everything in between.
The new 2006 Pierce rescue truck is expected to be delivered sometime at the end of September and beginning of October. The new rig will feature an onboard PTO-driven generator, a "Night-Scan" 6,000 Watt light-tower, twin hurst tools mounted on the bumper, and a speedy-dry hopper built into the rig.
