BEACON (28 Jan 01) - On Sunday, January 28, 2001, at around 4pm, the City of Beacon Fire Department and Beacon Volunteer Ambulance were dispatched to a reported kitchen fire at 37 Tironda Avenue. Upon arrival units found heavy fire in the rear of the 2nd floor of a 2.5 story multifamily dwelling. Firefighters also found a victim in the window of the 3rd floor apartment. The Beacon firefighters quickly rescued the elderly man which was transported BLS by Beacon Volunteer Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital for minor smoke inhalation. Due to the structure being a balloon frame, the fire quickly spread to the rear of the 3rd floor, the attic, and through the roof. Command called a 2nd alarm to cover their stations and then requested Village of Fishkill and Glenham Fire Departments to the scene for relief purposes. Beacon Ambulance treated two firefighters at the scene for minor injuries and transported one firefighter who was struck by a large chunk of ice that fell from the roof. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
